Deliberative Democracy in Practice
Showra's methodology is built on deliberative democracy: the idea that legitimate decisions emerge from structured, inclusive dialogue — not polls, not social media, not voting alone.
The Polis Foundation
Polis is an open-source platform created by the Computational Democracy Project. It helps large groups discover common ground through structured, anonymous dialogue powered by machine learning.
Participants read short statements and vote Agree, Disagree, or Pass. Machine learning clusters participants into opinion groups based on voting patterns — not identity or demographics. The algorithm then surfaces statements where diverse groups agree, revealing genuine common ground.
Polis has been adopted nationally by Taiwan, Singapore, and Finland, and deployed in 30+ countries for issues ranging from climate policy to constitutional reform.
What Showra Adds
Showra extends Polis with three additional layers:
Multilingual Support
LiveA bilingual interface with real-time machine translation, so participants can read and respond to statements in their own language. Self-hosted fonts and assets keep the platform fast and accessible anywhere.
Anonymity Architecture
Live + PlannedAnonymous participation is available today. Zero-knowledge proof authentication — verifying eligibility (for example, that someone is a resident or member) without exposing their identity — is on the roadmap, so people can take part candidly and without fear of reprisal.
AI-Assisted Analysis
LiveAutomated topic modeling, hierarchical clustering, and summarization make large-scale dialogue financially sustainable. AI flags potentially harmful content for human review rather than making autonomous removal decisions.
Five Democratic Mechanisms
Every design decision in Showra serves a specific democratic purpose:
Freedom to Speak Candidly
Anonymous participation lets people engage honestly — without fear of harassment, social pressure, or professional reprisal — protecting the candor that meaningful dialogue depends on.
Minority Voice Protection
The cluster-based architecture ensures minority opinion groups remain visible and cannot be statistically erased by majority positions or coordinated manipulation. Every perspective leaves a trace.
Manipulation Resistance
By structuring dialogue around specific statements rather than social media dynamics, Showra is architecturally resistant to astroturfing and coordinated inauthentic behavior.
Transparency & Auditability
Every conversation produces a published open record of how opinions were distributed and where consensus emerged — making public sentiment legible and verifiable.
Leaderlessness
The platform surfaces ideas rather than personalities, keeping the focus on substance and making the process resistant to factional capture or domination by a few loud voices.
The Role of AI
AI performs clustering, topic modeling, summarization, and moderation flagging — tasks that would otherwise require dozens of hours of expert human analysis per conversation. This makes sustained large-scale dialogue financially sustainable.
AI does not make decisions, remove content autonomously, or replace human judgment. For moderation, AI flags potentially harmful content for human review — reducing both the staffing burden and the risk of moderator bias silencing legitimate voices.
Core principle: AI augments human deliberation, never replaces it.
Security & Privacy
All participation can be fully anonymous. No personal information is required to vote or submit statements.
Zero-knowledge proof authentication is planned — allowing participants to prove eligibility (such as residency or membership) without revealing their identity. This lets organizations verify who's taking part without surveilling them. Planned
After conversations conclude, only anonymized, aggregated data is published. Individual voting records are never exposed.
